I Am a Human - Playing Favorites

What is it about human nature that compels us to pick one item out of a group and declare it the "favorite."  What is your favorite color?  What is your favorite flavor of ice cream?  Who is your favorite hockey player?  What was your favorite subject in school?  When you read articles about "favoritism" they carry a negative connotation...suggesting that you select one item at the neglect of the others...like parents having a favorite child or a teacher having a "teacher's pet."  Well, I do have a favorite color...it is blue.  Why?  It pleases me, I am complemented when I wear it, I have blue eyes, I love the sky.

And I do have a favorite ice cream flavor...it is pistachio.  Why? Something about the taste makes me pause and brings to mind a favorite memory of my childhood, of my mother buying tiny inch-sized cubes of ice cream at a local dairy and only she and I liking the pistachio ones.

When I taught elementary school, I tried not to have a "pet" but I must admit I was often drawn to the boys who were mischievous...had that glint in their eye that said "I am a rascal and I know it...but life is so much fun!"

So it is interesting to me to think today about another favorite I have at the moment.  It is a tomato plant in my garden.  It is the one tomato plant that seems to be working so hard to please me.
Black Heirloom Cherry Tomato
Others in the garden do not seem to be trying as hard.  Some are threatening to have "powdery mildew" even though I spray them with a milk and water mixture.  Some are spindly and and scrawny, casually throwing out a little green tomato that just seems to hang there.  But my "FAVORITE" tomato plant is a Black Heirloom Cherry Tomato that was a gift to me from a friend in one of my Learning-in-Retirement classes.  Bob started some plants from seeds he had saved from last summer and these seedlings flourished so he was feverishly hunting for good homes for them...like someone who works at a pet rescue shelter.

Maybe it was because the plant was so happy to have a real home.  Maybe it was because the plant especially liked the location. But from the day I put it in the ground, it did everything right.  It gifted me with the first ripe tomato of the season.

Each day I go out and pick some that are waiting to grace my table.

Sometimes I eat them like candy...just popping them into my mouth...so sweet and delicious.  But this week Bristol Farms had my favorite Gioia Burrata Cheese on sale so tonight it is Burrata, with black heirloom tomatoes and a drizzle of olive oil for dessert!!!

Yes, I am playing favorites regarding this plant... but it has earned its place in my affections!

  2. Hello Patricia, the tomatoes look yummy. Candy for sure!
As for our propensity to delineate favorites, I read somewhere that the human brain begins to categorize things while we are just infants. I should try to retrace my steps to that article, but suffice it to say, we begin our retrieval archiving at an early stage. There is no negative connotation in having favorites, but think of it as the brain's method of organizing data. Take that siblings of my Cath, my middle child, aka the favorite.... :)

  3. Favourites yes I have them but not all of them remain constant as I discover new things. It is interesting that these tomatoes are so dark almost black rather than red, saw them here in a shop for the very first time only just last week!

  5. Hi Patricia,
this post caught my eye because I discovered by accident once that I do not like to choose favourites at all. I bought a book ~ Reflections from a Mother"s Heart ~ where you fill in questions about yourself and the book is intended to be given to your child. There were a lot of questions about favourites and I found I couldn't choose. I must be a little different. ;)
